Collagen Hydrolysate

Skin, Hair & Nail Health

Collagen is a popular protein supplement, mixed daily into smoothies and coffees to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles and for healthier hair and nails.

Though current research is not extensive, some recent studies have suggested oral supplementation with Collagen Hydrolysate can contribute to better skin, hair and nails in adults.

For example, a 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis in the International Journal of Dermatology on hydrolysed collagen's effects on skin ageing in 1,125 women aged 20-70 over 90 days showed effectiveness in improving skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.¹

Another study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology from 2017 concluded that the daily ingestion of collagen peptides increased nail growth and improved brittle nails in conjunction with a notable decrease in the frequency of broken nails.²

Finally, some studies from 2012 and 2023 in the NIH have suggested that because collagen is high in Proline (the most important amino acid for keratin production) it could also improve hair health and reducing thinning.³,⁴

Faster Muscle Recovery

Studies have shown that daily supplementation with collagen peptides may allow faster recovery times post-exercise and reduce damage to muscles and joints.

For example, a systematic review of studies, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2023, concluded on the positive effects of collagen peptide supplementation on body composition, collagen synthesis, and recovery from joint injury and exercise.⁵

Another study in the Journal of Amino Acids from 2021 details a randomised crossover trial in untrained middle-aged men. Supplementation with collagen peptides reduced post exercise muscle soreness and fatigue and increased muscle strength 2 days after the exercise bout.⁶

Joint Support

Numerous studies have explored the potential benefits of collagen supplementation for joint health and addressing conditions like osteoarthritis. We explored a few notable examples.

In a 2013 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, it was discovered that a daily intake of 40mg of non-hydrolyzed type II collagen resulted in enhanced knee joint extension and decreased discomfort during rigorous physical activity.⁷

Additionally, in a study conducted in the USA over 24 weeks, athletes reported improved joint comfort when they incorporated a dietary supplement containing hydrolysed collagen into their regimen.⁸

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research analysed several clinical trials. The meta-analysis concluded that collagen peptide supplementation had a positive effect on knee osteoarthritis symptoms, including reduced pain and improved joint function.⁹

Gut and Digestive Support

Collagen may improve digestion and gut health by strengthening the gut lining and improving the gut microbiota.

Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2019 explored the potential influence of collagen peptides on gut microbiota composition. The study found that collagen peptides had a positive impact on gut microbiota diversity, which is associated with better digestive health.¹⁰

A study published in JMIR Formative Research in 2022 examined the impact of collagen peptides on gut-related symptoms. Participants who consumed collagen peptides experienced improvements in digestive symptoms, such as bloating and abdominal discomfort.¹¹

Another study in the Journal of Functional Foods from 2020 also demonstrates the positive effect of a high-collagen peptide diet on the gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acid metabolism. This suggests that supplementing with collagen can help improve the break down of MCTs for energy.¹²

Adaptogenic Mushrooms

Cordyceps Mushroom: Energy & Endurance

Cordyceps Militaris has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is believed to benefit energy and endurance through increased oxygen utilisation, improved ATP production (the primary energy currency of cells) and increased maximum power output and peak strength by boosting exercise capacity and time to exhaustion.

A 2017 study in the Journal of Dietary Supplements found that after 3 weeks of supplementation of Cordyceps, there were significant improvements in maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), time to exhaustion (TTE), and ventilatory threshold (VT) in the group that received the mushroom blend (MR). Additionally, acute supplementation with the blend improved tolerance to high-intensity exercise, suggesting that consistent, long-term supplementation may provide even greater benefits.¹³

Another study explored the potential benefits of Cordyceps Militaris on exercise performance. Researchers administered a Cordyceps militaris ethyl acetate extract (CMEE) and conducted grip strength tests over several weeks. They found that CMEE led to a slight increase in grip strength, similar to the effects seen with red ginseng. Biochemical analysis revealed that CMEE affected biomarkers associated with ATP (energy) production pathways, suggesting that Cordyceps militaris may improve exercise performance by increasing ATP production rather than reducing muscle fatigue during exercise.¹⁴

Other studies have shown that Cordyceps supplementation can lead to improvements in exercise capacity and VO2 max, a measure of fitness level, especially in older adults.¹⁵,¹⁶

Reishi Mushroom: Stress & Anxiety

Reishi is often referred to as a 'soothing elixir' or, in traditional Chinese terminology, the "mushroom of eternal life." It contains triterpenes which may provide support for the immune system and the nervous system, potentially better sleep. Reishi is often used to reduce stress and anxiety.

A study in the Pondicherry Journal of Nursing concluded that Reishi had potential as an anti-depressant due to its ability to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, inner peace, and soothing effects on the nervous system.¹⁷

Another study in Healthcare in 2020 showed a reduction in stress and depression from taking Reishi supplementation in a double-blind 6 week trial on women.¹⁸

Finally, a study in the International Journal of Medicine in 2016, albeit on mice (as are most Reishi studies so far), showed anti-anxiety effects.¹⁹

Reishi and Shiitake: Immunity

Shiitake and Reishi mushrooms are believed to offer immune-boosting benefits due to compounds like beta-glucans and other antioxidants. Shiitake mushrooms stimulate immune cells and have antimicrobial properties, while Reishi mushrooms contain immune-stimulating beta-glucans and triterpenes that help modulate immune responses.

Beta-glucans have been shown been shown to increase host immune defense by activating complement system, enhancing macrophages and natural killer cell function. They have even been shown to fight cancer cells.²⁴

Reishi has been supported as an immune-booster. A 2023 study in Foods suggested its polysaccharides aid in weight reduction, enhance glucose metabolism, and boost immune response. In fact, some in vitro studies suggest its potential against coronaviruses.²⁵

A study on Shiitake in the Journal of the American Nutrition Association in 2015 showed that daily consumption of shiitake improved immunity in healthy young adults.²⁵

In another study in 2019, researchers analysed combining Shiitake with Reishi and highlight the immune-modulatory potential of the mushroom formula based on beta-glucan content.²⁶
